Economic Outlook for 2023 and Beyond

Doug Duncan, Fannie Mae

Douglas G. Duncan is Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at Fannie Mae where he is responsible for forecasts and analyses of the economy and the housing and mortgage markets. Duncan also oversees strategic research regarding the potential impact of external factors on the housing industry.

Under his leadership, Fannie Mae’s Economic & Strategic Research Group (ESR) won the NABE Outlook Award, presented annually for the most accurate GDP and Treasury note yield forecasts, in both 2015 and 2016 – the first recipient in the award's history to capture the honor two years in a row. In addition, ESR was awarded by Pulsenomics for best home price forecast.

Named one of Bloomberg/BusinessWeek's 50 Most Powerful People in Real Estate and Inman News’ 100 Most Influential People in Real Estate, Duncan is Fannie Mae's source for information and analyses on demographics and the external business and economic environment; the implications of changes in economic activity on the company's strategy and execution; and for forecasting overall housing, economic, and mortgage market activity.

Prior to joining Fannie Mae, Duncan was Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at the Mortgage Bankers Association. His experience also includes work on the Financial Institutions Project at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and service as a LEGIS Fellow and staff member with the Committee on Banking, Finance, and Urban Affairs for Congressman Bill McCollum in the U.S. House of Representatives. Previously, Duncan was a Board member of the National Association of Business Economics and a Board member and Chairman of Strategies to Elevate People (STEP).

Duncan is a Hoyt Professional Fellow at the Homer Hoyt Institute. He was chosen as the North Dakota State University College of Agriculture Alumni of the Year in 2018. He was also elected as a Trustee of North Dakota State University in 2022.

Duncan received his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Texas A&M University and his B.S. and M.S. in Agricultural Economics from North Dakota State University.

Steve Richman

In this session, we will discuss: Identification of external and internal motivators, the four C’s to suCCCCess, the seduction of negativity and how to avoid it, and much more. 

Steve Richman has spoken in every state to more than 500,000 professionals at more than 1,000 companies. He draws on his experiences as a litigation attorney, business consultant, account executive, disc jockey, father, and husband to deliver a practical message. 90% of Steve’s bookings are actually rebookings from people who have seen him in the past. The most common thing heard after he presents is, “If I knew it was going to be this good, I would have had more people here.” All presentations are customized to the client and he does not sell a book or a system from the stage. He is a presenter first and foremost. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Steve currently resides in Raleigh, NC.

Ari Karen, Mitchell Sandler LLC., CEO, Strategic Compliance Partners

Ari Karen is the head of Mitchell Sandler's litigation and labor and employment practices. Ari represents businesses and financial institutions in litigation matters, government investigations, and advises clients on regulatory compliance matters. He is widely praised for his business-friendly style of representation that combines aggressive advocacy with a sensitivity to practical business considerations. Ari's diverse expertise in employment, litigation, and regulatory matters allows him to develop and implement multifaceted strategies drawing from diverse experiences that provide his clients an edge in litigation and competitive environments.

Ari litigates before state and federal trial and appellate courts nationwide. He has won precedent-setting decisions against the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, blocking the EEOC’s efforts to establish that employers could be held liable for violations of Title VII dating back to its passage in 1964. He has also counseled mortgage banks and financial services firms on their development of cutting-edge employment policies and procedures, as well as developing creative but compliant business strategies.

Navi Singh, Vice President, Mortgage Production Manager at Centier Bank

Kyle Lunford, Director Community Development at Ruoff Mortgage

This lunch session will focus on efforts by IMBA and member organizations in the area of affordable housing.

Navi Singh is a career banker with 25 years of financial and mortgage experience. As the VP – Mortgage Production Manager, he oversees the production lending operations for Centier Bank across Centier’s footprint. He is considered the Subject Matter Expert in Construction Lending at Centier having led a team in Construction Lending for the last 7 ½ years. Navi is an MBA graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and is an active resident of the Carmel community, where he resides with his wife and their two boys. He is a member of Indiana Mortgage Banker's Association and Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors and is a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.

Kyle Lunford was previously with Teacher’s Credit Union as the manager of their Mortgage Direct unit. He has been in the mortgage and banking industry since 2008. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from Bethel College and his MBA from the University of Saint Francis. Lunford is on the board for nonprofit, Heroes Camp, as well as serving a three-year term on the board of PBS 39.“The community around us is truly what makes a house feel like home,” said Mark Music, Ruoff President & CEO. “We are excited to have Kyle join our team to help kick off our financial literacy initiative in the communities we serve.”
